he automotive industry is one of the traditional but never “aging” manufacturing sectors. It has been being vigorous in the last one hundred years in terms of expansion, restructuring and continuous adoption of new technologies. At the same time, the spatial organization of the industry has also experienced several important changes, and the change of production pattern is one of the major factors behind the dynamics of its spatial evolution. In this paper, the authors first review the major features of the spatial organization of the world automotive industry before the 1980s and summarize its spatial evolution into four stages, i.e. the beginning dispersed development under the artisanal craft based production method, and highly concentrated development, “core peripheral” decentralization and network decentralization periods under mass production. They then analyze recent new developments of the industry after the 1980s, particularly the widespread of lean production, and identify the features of the spatial organization of the industry under the new production pattern and factors behind it. Lastly, they discuss briefly implications of these new developments for China’s automotive industry.

Abstract The study on automated cartographic generalization has little breakthrough due to the lack of depth of generalization knowledge gained nowadays. This paper expounded the methods of intelligent generalization in GIS environment. The key points were: 1)combining knowledge inference with mathematical models; 2) using geographic characteristics oriented mechanism in generalization knowledge, including the knowledge rules orienting to geographic features, to geographic object classes, and to specific geographic regions. In this paper, the authors’ strategy of realizing intelligent generalization in GIS environment was related at first. And then followed the flow chart of math model process driven by knowledge inference, as well as the structure of generalization expert knowledge base. Finally, various geographic characteristic oriented knowledge rules were described.

he inter regional passenger linkage is a key part of inter regional economic linkage and cultural exchange. Hong Kong has returned to China, and the transport infrastructure linking Hong Kong and other Chinese regions has been being developed quickly. On the other hand, there is no question that Hong Kong will also be the most important transfer place for China’s international trade. In this paper, the historical change and its influential factors , and developing tendency of passenger flow between Hong Kong and other Chinese regions are discussed. According to the investigation and statistical analysis, the passenger exchange between Hong Kong and other Chinese regions grew drastically in past two decades, and there is great growth potential of passenger exchange in next decade. The passenger traffic volume, for example, increased from 846 million people in 1980 to over 700 million people at present, and the average growth rate per year attained to 15%. But the results also indicate that the growth type changed from “high growth”to “low growth”. Most passengers took place between Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta region, with percentage of 65% in total passengers. Railway transport is the key transport mode for the passenger travel. In the light of the economic development, the passenger flows between Hong Kong and Beijing/Shanghai will increase in future. The economic benefits of Hong Kong—Beijing and Hong Kong—Shanghai direct through trains might be desirable because of enough passenger sources.

iming at a deeper understanding of the international trend of economic integration and regionalism, the author of this paper gives a summary and analysis to the basic characteristics of the worldwide practice of regionalism and regional cooperation, with focus on the role of government in such a trend, mainly through elaborating its objectives and measures proposed. The basic geographical features of regionalism worldwide and the institutional development of regional cooperation have been reviewed from a dynamic point of view. Further more, the objectives and approaches of regional cooperation of representative regionalism groups have been analyzed comparatively, with an additional introduction to the major related policy measures adopted.

igital elevation model (DEM) was built in the research. DEM, slope model and bamboo distribution model formed digital terrain model (DTM) together. DTM was applied very well in the research of Giant Panda Habitat. Comparing with the real panda distribution area of the survey result in 1974, the area of potential panda habitat, which was formed from DTM according to three criteria (elevation, slope and bamboo area), is bigger and almost double. The suitability assessment of 754 km 2 potential panda habitat shows 205 km 2 as most suitable habitat, 297 km 2 as moderately suitable habitat and 252 km 2 as marginally suitable habitat for Giant Panda.

t is necessary to have a suitable regionalization for researching the complicated system of man nature and regional sustainable development. The level of global change resarch depends on the cognitive depth about the regional differentiation. When we have an eco geographic regional system and inquire into its application, there will be a regional frame for us to study the relation of regional development and terrestrial ecosystem. This paper approaches some problems of the eco geographic regionalization from several aspects.

etian Town of Changding County, Fujian Province, is a representative of desertification induced by water erosion in granitic hilly areas of Southern China. Two factors are accountable for the serious water erosion induced desertification. In physical aspect, the thick weathered horizona of the granite provide material basis for the development of desertification. Sufficient precipitation and high rainstorm intensity increase the water erosion intensity. In socio-economic aspect, rapid population growth exerted pressure on land, several deforestation of forest on a large scale resulted in destruction of the vegetation. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, massive prevention and control was carried out following the principle of scientific experiment and research in combination with local peoples’ practice. The control and combat of desertification induced by water erosion improved the ecological environment significantly.

o obtain the information of ground exactly, quickly and economically, is the need of sustainable development of crop and plant cultivation. The availability means is to set up the system for estimating crop production using the information of satellite remote sensing. The system can be used to monitor crop growth and development and growing area, and estimate crop productions. This paper analyses the current situation of cultivated land, agricultural statistics, and the development for estimating crop productions. Using the information of satellite remote sensing can play an improtant role in sustainable development of crop and plant cultivation. It is not replaced by other methods. It is possible to set up the countrywide system based on achievements of the eighth five year plan of nation.

 systematic analysis on the modernization and its characteristics in the southern Jiangsu province is made in this paper. It is put forward that the development progress from enterprises grow up to industrialization and urbanization development is the internal power of the modernization development of southern Jiangsu province, and that the serious questions of cultivated land sudden decrease and its quality descending in the processes of urbanization development will restrict agricultrual economy and the whole regional economy sustainable development, and that the essential approach of these problems is to understand overall some issue problems. In order to realize the objective of the total dynamic equilibrium of cultivated land and provide a well foundation for regional modernization, we must effectually control the total of constructive land as an emphasis and depend on the construction of land use controlled system.

t receives wide range respond since the philosophy idea of regional sustainable development was put forward in 1980’s. But various groups of people have their own different understanding of what regional sustainable development means. This paper discusses the necessity of constructing an index system of regional sustainable development and basic principles while constructing the system. We designed a gross framework for the system based on its principles, and finally we discuss concisely the relationship between the qualitative and quantitative indexes while selecting them.

s an important branch of Human Geography, Cultural Geography merged late yet has demonstrated a fast developing speed in China. According to a general survey of the situation during recent ten years in this paper, its development may be summarized as follows: 1) The theories of Cultural Geography have experienced the stages of introduction and assimilation, and are entering the selfdeveloping stage. 2) The regional study of Cultural Geography is moving from macrocosm towards microcosm. 3) The historical study of Cultural Geography is moving from periods towards regions. 4) The monographic study of Cultural Geography is moving from simplism towards pluralism. 5) The synthetical study of Cultural Geography is moving from kernel towadrds frontier. The gengeral tendency is to become more concrete, regional and synthetical.
