Abstract

This paper is a mainly pragmatic response to utilitarian criticisms of the humanities. It first outlines political, public and practical fronts on which the humanities are under assault, identifying critics and their conspirators. Then, as a part of its defence of the humanities it expounds some of their central strengths. These range from the philosophical to the practical: lending critical perspectives to knowledge production, enriching lives, developing skills for uncertain and increasingly connected futures, improving science and supporting institutional income and credibility. Finally, the paper suggests that humanists must not only continue valuable conceptual and empirical disciplinary work but must add the very defence of the humanities to professional activity.

(Institute for the Future, ; Else, 2014; OECD, 2016; OECD Labour and Employment Ministerial Meeting, 2016)。

(Starr, 2013; Hay & Beaverstock, 2016; or humanities work addressing global inequalities at the University of Manchester)。

(American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 2013: 57)。

(American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 2013: 40)。

(National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2015)。

(American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 2013: 43)。

The decades-old trade of exporting nonhuman mammals by ship from Australia became a major political issue in 2011, when video taken by animal rights group Animals Australia was broadcast on television, showing Australian cattle being appallingly abused in Indonesian abattoirs. Taking its cue from the unprecedented response from Australians to the 2011 footage, many of whom were haunted by the video images, this article argues that the live export trade may be seen to wrong nonhuman animals according to several key ethical frameworks.

Who speaks for whom? Health humanities and the ethics of representation

[J]. Medical Humanities, 41(2): 77-80. doi:10.1136/medhum-2014-010642.

Abstract The medical or health humanities are in essence a form of advocacy, a means of addressing a problem of underrepresentation. They focus on suffering, rather than pathology, and on sociocultural understandings of illness and disability, rather than a narrow biomedical perspective. The health humanities thus analyse and attempt to recalibrate the power imbalance in healthcare. This article reviews health humanities scholarship that addresses underrepresentation through the analysis of illness and disability narratives. It examines the ethics of representation by exploring how literary representation functions, its aesthetic as well as political dimensions, and how it operates as a relay mechanism for power. The mechanism of representation is further explored through a reading of Eli Clare's narrative Exile and Pride. Donna Haraway's notion of articulations is proposed as a tool for a more ethical approach to representation. The article suggests that transparency about the power health humanities scholars stand to gain through representation may contribute to a more ethical health humanities practice. What is a death with dignity?

Proponents of the legalization of assisted suicide often appeal to our supposed right to “die with dignity” to defend their case. I examine and assess different notions of “dignity” that are operating in many arguments for the legalization of assisted suicide, and I find them all to be deficient. I then consider an alternative conception of dignity that is based on Aristotle's conception of the conditions on the best life. I conclude that, while such a conception of dignity fits best with our intuitions about the conditions under which a life has dignity, it supports the legalization of assisted suicide only under very limited circumstances.

The future of the research university and the fate of the humanities

[J]. Cultural Critique, 61(1): 1-21. doi:10.1353/cul.2005.0033.

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content: html_title The Future of the Research University and the Fate of the Humanities /html_title Peter Uwe Hohendahl (bio) The American research university has received a great deal of attention during the past decade or so, mostly by concerned observers who believe that the research university is in danger of losing its crucial role in the American system of higher education (Ehrenberg; Cole, Barber, and Graubard; Whiston and Geiger). Under these circumstances, a discussion of its future and its potential impact on the development of the humanities in particular, appears to be a difWcult and potentially not-very-rewarding task. If the skeptics are correct in their analysis, the university's future is at best uncertain, which means that the fate of the humanities as part of the research university is equally uncertain. Among the critics of the more recent evolution of the university we find, for instance, Bill Readings, who has argued that the new university (by which he means mostly the research university) is more interested in the excellence of its administration and its national reputation than in its commitment to the subject matter of teaching or research. The "university of excellence" strives for public recognition without much regard for the values that once defined the idea of a university. By contrasting the contemporary American or international university with Humboldt's ideal of the university, Readings gets the fuel for his highly suggestive and far-reaching polemic without paying too much attention to the actual evolution of the American research university during the twentieth century and its more recent difficulties. However, these problems must be examined in more specific terms than Readings's rather general charges allow (for a critical assessment, see LaCapra). Therefore I propose to begin with a brief account of the present state of the American research university by examining the more recent development of its central elements before I address the complex [End Page 1] question of its future and its likely impact on the humanities. This present state has frequently been described in terms of a crisis, especially in the humanities (Hohendahl 2000), yet we should keep in mind that the social sciences have not necessarily done better, and even the natural sciences, although they have traditionally been considered the successful core of the modern research university (Geiger 1986, Geiger 1993), these days find themselves in a discouraging financial environment. The very notion of research as a process of cognitive learning unhindered by pressures that are unrelated to the idea of scientific work can no longer be taken for granted. Observers such as Charles M. Vest and Neal Lane have pointed out that the methods and expectations of doing research in the academy have definitely changed during the past two decades. The use of the term "crisis" for these changes still presupposes the notion that we can overcome the present problems and then return to a state of normalcy that would look more like the past than the dreaded present. However, it seems to me that such a return to a status quo ante is unlikely; in other words, many of the changes that have occurred have to be understood as irreversible transformations. The research university of the twenty-first century will, I believe, significantly differ from the model of the mid-twentieth century that we still in many ways consider the norm. Furthermore, I feel that the changes of the past twenty years are a reasonably good indication of the direction in which the research university will develop. In the following analysis I want to focus on selected aspects of this transformation. I will do this in the form of theses rather than by way of a full and systematic analysis. In these theses I will address several issues, among them the political and social environment of the university, its organizational structure, and the definition of research in different fields. What I want to show is that the function of the research university has been altered. In particular, cultural, social, and political expectations have changed and therefore also the climate in which the institution has to operate. Needless to say, the humanities have not remained unaffected by these transformations. The history of the American research...

The article discusses how social frictions within the Livonian peasantry manifested themselves in times of hunger and how the authorities sought to combat the situation in the 1840s and late 1860s. After the emancipation reforms of 1816-19, provision for the peasantry was left solely to communal and public institutions. When reserves became scarce, community authorities were able to seek a loan from the manor (in the 1840s) or apply for a state advance loan. Community authorities were mean when it came to grain loans to the landless who formed the majority of the community members. Although community leaders played a role in insufficient hunger relief in the 1840s, the main culprits for the mass sufferings were the landlords' selfishness or carelessness and the government's reluctance to grant loans. In the late 1860s the scope of hunger relief to the landless depended almost entirely on community authorities. Self-seeking community authorities could effectively block relief loans to the landless.

Abstract This article examines the controversial notion of the role and value of the humanities in the contemporary university. It provides a review of the history of the emergence of the humanities in the European universities, arguing that any attempt to justify the presence of the humanities in the modern university in instrumental terms is futile. Through its depiction of the evolution of the humanities as a particular compendium of disciplinary fields, the article demonstrates that the humanities have become a focal point for the exploration of the problems of meaning, significance and truth, which are inherent components of language itself. Through its portrayal of the historical development of the humanities, the article emphasizes the interminable nature of these problems, stressing that the inconclusive quality of these debates is a definitive feature of Modernity itself he humanities have become the locus for Modernity's self-awareness. The articulation and extension of this self-awareness is an imperative that eludes the logic of instrumental reason to provide a justificatory category of its own.
